Yuichiro Tamaki is a prominent Japanese politician who has played a significant role in national policy-making for many years. Born on May 1, 1969, in Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture, Tamaki was raised as the eldest son in a local farming household, shaping his early values around community and public service. After graduating from Takamatsu High School, he entered the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Law. In 1993, upon graduation, he began his career at the Ministry of Finance, an experience that laid the foundation for his extensive knowledge in fiscal policy, taxation, diplomacy, and administrative governance.

Extensive Government Experience Across Key Ministries

During his tenure at the Ministry of Finance, Tamaki held a variety of key positions: he was seconded to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Middle Eastern Division, served at the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission under the Financial Services Agency, worked as Director of the General Affairs Division at the Osaka Regional Taxation Bureau, served as Senior Specialist at the Cabinet Office, and later became Principal Deputy Director at the Budget Bureau. In 1997, he completed his studies at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, earning advanced expertise in public policy. These diverse experiences broadened his perspective and strengthened his capabilities as a policymaker.

Entry Into Politics and Six Consecutive Electoral Victories

In 2005, Tamaki left the Ministry of Finance to run for the House of Representatives in Kagawa’s 2nd district. Although he narrowly lost in his first attempt, he persevered and, after four years of preparation, won his first election in 2009 with 109,863 votes. Since then, he has been reelected in 2012, 2014, 2017, 2021, and 2024, earning the trust of voters in his district for six consecutive terms.

Tamaki has also played key roles within various political parties. In 2016, he ran in the Democratic Party leadership election and later served as Acting Secretary-General. In 2017, he was elected under the Party of Hope and subsequently became its leader. In 2018, he served as Co-Leader and then Leader of the Democratic Party for the People. Following a party reorganization in 2020, he became the founding leader of the new Democratic Party for the People.
